SMYRNA A.M. - TAYLOR LOYAL
One night last summer, Donald Brock awoke to the sound of glass breaking.
A fire had started in his garage and was sweeping through to the middle of his house. When he realized the windows of his home were cracking due to the heat, he got his wife, Sun, and daughter, Daisy, to safety.
They escaped the fire, which was caused by a short in overhead lighting. But they lost their home and most of what was in it.
During the days that followed the June 6 fire at his house on Enon Springs Road, Brock was contacted by public insurance adjuster FirstCall. The Middle Tennessee company works with insured people through what can be a lenghty process of filing insurance claims.
"They basically work like a realtor (in that) they have a professional fee that is commission-based," Brock said. "They helped me go room to room and photograph everything and figure out what was what."
FirstCall helped Brock document every item in the house and worked to get an estimated 41 percent over what he would have received from his insurance company, according to FirstCall founder Phil Breeden.
"Most people are not experienced in property loss claims," Breeden said. "Most people will never have a major property loss claim in their whole life. And if they do have one, it will only be one."
FirstCall, a 20-year-old company with a staff of 17, knows the ins and outs of industry, Breeden said.
"There's a lot of money left on the table that people don't know about," Breeden said. "It's kind of like the old expression that you don't know what you don't know."
Brock said using FirstCall allowed him to continue to work and carry on with his life while a third party handled his insurance claim.
"It gave me a lot of peace of mind," Brock said.
